In Greater Manchester, Chadderton (pop. 34,818) is an Oldham Metropolitan Borough town. On 9 September 1955, College of Arms granted the coat of arms of the Chadderton Urban District Council. For government that is manorial, Chadderton was a Fee of Tottington constituent manor, whose overlords were Clitheroe Castle Barons, the de Lacys, but Chadderton formed part of the hundred of Salford for civil jurisdiction. In south Chadderton in 1938-39, Avro, manufacturer of British aircraft built a factory known as BAE Chadderton. Seat of Chadderton Urban District Council was Chadderton Town Hall. In the north of Chadderton, a park by the River Irk is Chadderton Hall Park, spanning an area of over 15 acres (6 ha), in what were the gardens of the manorial Chadderton Hall. Outside its boundary that is western, railway stations serve Chadderton, railway station of Mills Hill at its border with Moston and Middleton railway station at its New Moston border, Manchester.

During the Industrial Revolution and Victorian era, Chadderton's urbanisation and expansion coincided with developments in textile manufacture. A central Chadderton's building that is Victorian, and a station in southern Chadderton that is purpose-built at Broadgate include stations in Chadderton that Greater Manchester Police has. With its own overlords and lords line, who included the Chethams, Asshetons, Traffords, and Radclyffes, part of Lancashire, Chadderton's history is marked by its status as a manorial township. Indicating a fortified place amongst the hills, or the "chair, throne", cadeir, and the suffix of Old English -ton meaning a settlement, Chadderton from Caderton derives, which to be a combination of Cater or Cader, the Brythonic word, (modern Welsh: Caer) is believed.
