  • Chadderton

In Greater Manchester, Chadderton (pop. 34,818) is an Oldham Metropolitan Borough town. On 9 September 1955, College of Arms granted the coat of arms of the Chadderton Urban District Council. For government that is manorial, Chadderton was a Fee of Tottington constituent manor, whose overlords were Clitheroe Castle Barons, the de Lacys, but Chadderton formed part of the hundred of Salford for civil jurisdiction. In south Chadderton in 1938-39, Avro, manufacturer of British aircraft built a factory known as BAE Chadderton. Seat of Chadderton Urban District Council was Chadderton Town Hall. In the north of Chadderton, a park by the River Irk is Chadderton Hall Park, spanning an area of over 15 acres (6 ha), in what were the gardens of the manorial Chadderton Hall. Outside its boundary that is western, railway stations serve Chadderton, railway station of Mills Hill at its border with Moston and Middleton railway station at its New Moston border, Manchester.

Founded in 1977, a football club is Chadderton Park F.C. Oldham Town and Oldham Dew, Oldham Borough F.C. formed in 1964, were a football club of North West Counties League based in Chadderton. Opened in 1937, a swimming facility was Art Nouveau Chadderton Baths. During the Industrial Revolution and Victorian era, Chadderton's urbanisation and expansion coincided with developments in textile manufacture. A central Chadderton's building that is Victorian, and a station in southern Chadderton that is purpose-built at Broadgate include stations in Chadderton that Greater Manchester Police has. With its own overlords and lords line, who included the Chethams, Asshetons, Traffords, and Radclyffes, part of Lancashire, Chadderton's history is marked by its status as a manorial township. Indicating a fortified place amongst the hills, or the "chair, throne", cadeir, and the suffix of Old English -ton meaning a settlement, Chadderton from Caderton derives, which to be a combination of Cater or Cader, the Brythonic word, (modern Welsh: Caer) is believed.

Built onto Baths, Chadderton Sports Centre was closed and replaced by Chadderton Wellbeing Centre in January 2010. Formed in 1947, Chadderton F.C. is a football club of association under the Millbrow Football Club name, before adopting its name in 1957, later changing to Amateurs of North Chadderton. In the United Kingdom by the 1930s, Chadderton was the second most populous district and to obtain status of municipal borough the district council took steps, but this was not achieved. The first style co-educational grammar school opened by Lancashire County Council was Chadderton Grammar School. Persons that are ecclesiastically notable were (medieval bishop and academic) William Chaderton and Laurence Chaderton (the first Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, a leading Puritan and one of the translators of the Authorised King James Version of the Bible) within the extended Chadderton/Chaderton family. Outside Chadderton Town Hall, Chadderton War Memorial was, during the First World War, but later, the Second World War, originally erected "in honour of the Chadderton men who made the sacrifice that is supreme and of all who served their county in grateful remembrance".
