Indicating a fortified place amongst the hills, or the "chair, throne", cadeir, and the suffix of Old English -ton meaning a settlement, Chadderton from Caderton derives, which to be a combination of Cater or Cader, the Brythonic word, (modern Welsh: Caer) is believed.
